My work "Looking into Whites"

120cm x 100cm

Acrylic and oil on canvas

Judges comments: Looking into Whites

"If Dali had been born on the west coast of NZ his early work could have looked like this. It has a surreal dramaticism, yet with a true naturalists' eye for the writhing Ti-tree and wind bent Kanuka. There is the primal unknown/mystery of the bush echoed forebodingly in the menacing storm horizon."

Through these works I aim to inspire the viewer to connect with their natural surrounds and appreciate the beautiful intricacies of the landscape . My depictions of the native landscape seek to captivate and infuse the onlooker to engage with nature by presenting dramatic viewpoints of our ever changing coastlines and forests, emphasizing the native foliage, contours, shadows and colours .
The colours I have used and images depicted are extracted from the impressions I have retained from my daily wanderings in and around the west coast beaches of Auckland and primarily my home in Piha. Through a spectrum of deep blues , greys and greens, I endevour to demonstrate the power of the weather, the beauty of the regenerating native bush and the impressiveness of the landscape.

I work in the style of exaggerated realism using a combination of acrylic and oil paints to represent the volcanic hills and mountians and headlands which are continuously being shaped by the constant exposure to raw elements.
These pieces depict only the native flora to New Zealand. I am deeply passionate about preserving the native forest and bushland and strive to demonstrate the natural beauty of the region in all of its unmanicured and undisrupted grandeur.

Time is moving quickly toward this month's exhibition: The Original Art Sale in Auckland. This is an anual event and Auckland's largest art sale for which I am honoured to have had my work selected.

This will be an incredible event, displaying the work of over 400 selected and very talanted artists. Worth taking a look for certain! checkout details for the

"Whites Beach"
Sold this weekend from West Coast Gallery

Living in New Zealand has brought new inspiration to my love of landscape. I live surrounded by the magnificence of the wild west coast of the north island with its black sand beaches and volcanic mountain ranges gemmed with its waterfalls and last remaining ancient trees.

My recent work strives to accentuate the natural elements of the coastline, expressing the moods of the ever changing weather and highlighting the flora in all its naive grandure.

It is my aim to inspire the onlooker into a greater appreciation for the natural wonders that exist around our everyday lives yet so easily are neglected of acknowledgement or taken for granted. It is important for people to stay connected to nature and remove the devides that are created by our busy lives, and the immersion into the stresses, oblgations, and demands of the urban environment.

It is rejuvinating and theraputic to the human spirit to engage in our natural surroundings, and enjoy the beauty that the world has to share with us.

About

my

Art

The world impresses me. The weather, the sea, flowing water, the mountains and forests and jungles which ornament the earth are from what I derive inspiration. I am captivated by shadows and light and the vibrant colours that surround our daily lives, and this infuses my work.

I do not work from photographs, but purely from my experiences observing and existing in my surroundings. The earth and its elements are always moving and growing and developing and in understanding this, I allow my canvas to be alive. I shape the colours and contours with moods and emotions evoked throughout the course of a work. I let my pieces metamorphosis, with a single painting free to move through storm and calm, across sea and land, night and day.

My work reflects my personal perspective of the world and the way that I look at things and experience life. I aim to express my gratitude and appreciation of the beauty and magnificence that life offers to everyone and to instil those feelings in others.

I work in a mixed medium of oil and acrylic predominately on larger scale canvas.
Working on a large scale allows me the presence to draw the eyes in, to enrapture the onlooker and imbue the emotions of grandeur and allurement that I experience when I view the world.
